Working From Home With Kids

Many people believe that they can’t handle multiple rolls required to both raise a family and create an income. However, with a little patience and determination, it can be done.

Infancy

Infants do require a lot of Mom (and Dad), but with a little advanced preparation, even a new parent can make it work. A baby will spend most of his or her time sleeping, eating and crying. The trick is to work when baby sleeps, but only during the morning hours. Leave the afternoon and nighttime for doing housework and catching up on sleep. A new WAHM (Work at Home Mom) may try to squeeze several hours in a day, but it isn’t worth it. Start with one to two hours every other day to get into the swing of things. A lifesaver for many WAHMs is to get food, diapers and bottles/sippy cups ready the night before.

Toddlerhood

As kids grow, so do their tendencies to want to do everything Mom does. Toddlers want to be big. Working with a 2- or 3-year-old in tow requires loads of patience. Grab some crayons and paper, a toy laptop, and an old, disconnected phone and let the toddler “work” his or her own job. Try for 15-minute spurts. While that isn’t a great deal of time, it’s usually enough to get organized and prepared to work during the child’s nap or bedtime.

The truth about working from home

Tons of ads claim you can “work from home and make big bucks while spending all your time with your family.” The reality is that these jobs don’t really exist. Working from home means just that—working. A successful career, whether in or outside of the home, means dedication and staying on top of customer needs while tending personal obligations (diapers, snacks, potty training) all at the same time. The old adage “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” really holds here.

Best work-from-home jobs

The best jobs are the ones the intent telecommuter already knows how to do. For the creative types, photography or graphic design are excellent choices. Writers can work from home with little more than a computer and a train of thought. Crafty? Consider making jewelry or jumping on the “green” train and helping others save Mother Earth by using recycled materials for art. There are also many party format businesses such as Stella & Dot, 31 Gifts, and Tupperware that can offer flexibility, fun, and even some hefty product discounts. The caveat with these careers is that most people enter into them expecting to start sorting piles of cash overnight. With any side business, cash flow is usually shorter than the naps the children are, or are not, taking.

Many women work from home because they need a little extra income to supplement a spouse’s job or to replace wages lost after entering parenthood. Others do it for the opportunity to be someone other than “Mom” for a few moments of time. Ultimately, the decision to work from home is one that must be entered into with an open mind and the knowledge that the children’s needs must come first.

An Interview with Matt Schilit

Matt Schilit

Matt Schilit

Matt Schilit is a longtime school administrator, having served as a teacher, assistant principal and principal.  In his current position with the Allendale County School District in South Carolina, Matt Schilit supervises all data, evaluation and testing. Since testing is an integral part of a school’s funding, it is important for school systems to find leaders such at Matt Schilit with extensive experience in the classroom environment.

Recently, Matt Schilit discussed the importance of membership in professional organizations for the current or aspiring school administrator with the staff at Information Nation.

Information Nation: Matt Schilit, why do you believe membership in professional educator associations is so important for school administrators?

Matt Schilit:  School administrators are in the business of education, which holds as one of its key values the axiom that learning is ongoing and never stops.  Membership in professional organizations provide opportunities for school administrators to put that idea into practice and keep honing their professional skills while acquiring new ones as well.  Also, the camaraderie that develops with other professionals is invaluable.

Information Nation: Matt Schilit, which leading organizations do you recommend?

Matt Schilit:  For South Carolina I recommend SCASA (South Carolina Association for School Administrators) and nationally I recommend ASCD, formerly known as the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

Information Nation: Matt Schilit, what kind of professional development opportunities are you referring to?

Matt Schilit:  SCASA is currently offering convenient, free webinars in cutting-edge topics such as “Where Neuroscience, Technology, Mathematics and Common Core Intersect.”  There’s another on the Bullying Prevention Initiative being rolled out statewide. ASCD is currently offering seminars and institutes in such helpful topics as addressing common core state educational standards implementation, audits and standard reviews as well as practical issues such as “What Works in the Classroom.”

Information Nation: Matt Schilit, what are some other benefits associated with these memberships?

Matt Schilit:  Members are afforded many discounts on books and online materials for the professional educator with special emphasis on the administrative elements of 21st century educational leadership.

Information Nation: Matt Schilit, can you think of any other reasons why a school administrator would need to join SCASA or ASCD?

Matt Schilit:  Where the classroom, the main office and the Board of Education intersect is the domain of the school administrator.  One of the most helpful aspects of membership in professional organizations is the interaction between individual professionals that takes place in seminars and in social settings.  The practical insights that can be gleaned from such interactions are invaluable.  School administrators have a challenging job to do and this kind of peer support in a non-competitive, collaborative environment is essential for attaining the highest level of accomplishment possible.

Kelley D. Hamilton Talks about Retirees Returning to College

Kelley D. Hamilton

Kelley D. Hamilton

Kelley D. Hamilton is Chief Executive Officer and co-owner of Bonaventure Senior Living.

Information Nation: Why would anyone choose to return to college after retirement?

Kelley D. Hamilton: Ask 10 different senior adults and they will give at least 10 different answers.

Information Nation: Such as?

Kelley D. Hamilton: Some like to challenge themselves. Some enjoy the college experience. A few go for something to do.

Information Nation: But isn’t it expensive, especially on a retirement income?

Kelley D. Hamilton: Many colleges and universities offer tuition discounts or waivers for older adults. Several allow retirees to audit classes for free.

Information Nation: But they don’t get credit if they audit a class, right?

Kelley D. Hamilton: Right. However, they gain knowledge and increase brain stimulation. Plus, they have the satisfaction of knowing they can sit in a classroom full of teenagers and 20-somethings and keep up.

Information Nation: Are they capable of keeping up?

Kelley D. Hamilton: Of course they can! They have a great advantage over their younger classmates.

Information Nation: What sort of advantage?

Kelley D. Hamilton: Older adults are inclined to be more focused and more determined to get a good grade. They devote all the time and energy they can to learning.

Information Nation: Suppose a senior adult does want a degree?

Kelley D. Hamilton: Some colleges offer scholarships for senior adults. Some state schools have senior adult scholarship programs that provide free tuition for 60+ citizens.

Information Nation: At what age do people generally decide it isn’t worth the bother to get a degree?

Kelley D. Hamilton: Funny you should ask that. A year or so ago I read about this lady named Nola Ochs who received her bachelor’s degree at the age of 95.

Information Nation: Amazing!

Kelley D. Hamilton: Yes it is. Even more noteworthy is that she went on to get her master’s degree when she was 98.

Information Nation: Ninety-eight? I’m impressed.

Kelley D. Hamilton: As am I. She is the most senior person in the world to ever receive a college degree.

Information Nation: What did she do after graduation? Start a new career?

Kelley D. Hamilton: I know you mean that as a tongue-in-cheek question, but the answer may surprise you.

Information Nation: Don’t tell me she started a new business and is now on the top Fortune 500 list.

Kelley D. Hamilton: Not yet. But after graduation she was hired as a guest lecturer on a cruise ship and then made the talk show circuit. So it appears she has done OK with her degrees.

Information Nation: She finally retired then?

Kelley D. Hamilton: The last I read about her said that she was a graduate teaching assistant and a master’s degree student. Don’t underestimate our senior citizens.

Information Nation: Do you think someone will beat her record?

Kelley D. Hamilton: It wouldn’t surprise me. I meet smart, energetic seniors every day who aren’t ready to retire to the front porch rocking chair.

Information Nation: Not all retirees have stopped working?

Kelley D. Hamilton: Some of the retirees who move into our senior communities say they are just getting their second wind. College or a second career is right up there with golfing and travel on our residents’ bucket lists.

Information Nation: It sounds like retirement communities are nothing like the stereotypes we’ve come to envision.

Kelley D. Hamilton: At Bonaventure, we make sure of that. Retirees are in control of their life, as they should be.

Information Nation: I believe Bonaventure’s motto is Life on your terms.” What does that mean?

Kelley D. Hamilton: We are committed to supporting freedom of choice for our residents. We believe that retirees have the right to make decisions about retirement living, and we are there to assist them with their choices
Kelley D. Hamilton and his staff are passionate about providing the best in retirement and assisted living accommodations for senior adults. Bonaventure communities are located in the Western United States. Learn more at RetirementPerfected.com.

Four Myths about Spending Cuts

Many analysts believe that the ongoing political discussion regarding automatic spending cuts has complicated the public’s understanding on the issue. Presentation Solutions takes a look at several myths circulating in America.

Myth #1: Obama should be blamed for the spending cuts. This idea has been thoroughly discussed and argued by both sides of the aisle.  The dreaded sequester was included in an initial deal proposed in 2011 to help resolve the ugly debt ceiling fight.

According to the Price of Politics by Bob Woodward, the current administration came up with the idea to include the measure, and this was supported by both chambers through the passing of the Budget Control Act in 2011, signed into law by President Obama.

Most observers believe that neither of the two sides has genuinely pushed for talks to negotiate for the replacement of the sequester.

Myth #2: Sequester will impact the world as we know it immediately. The sequestration law led to the establishment of measures to undertake cuts by federal agencies. In reality, it will take some time before the actual execution is implemented. Effects will take months to sink in, not a couple of weeks.

For instance, we will see the laying-off of many federal workers but the scheduling and duration of the lay-offs will vary considerably. Public impact by such cuts will not be immediate.

Myth #3: It’s easy to cut $85 billion. It will be easier to prove this statement if the cuts were evenly subtracted from all sectors of the $3.5 trillion federal budget. It would be more acceptable if cuts were done strategically in a manner that would not adversely affect sectors that are working properly. Unfortunately, this is not the way the bill has been structured. Agencies will have no choice but to cut efficiently-run programs in  the same way as over-staffed ones.

The $85 billion is to be removed from a tiny portion of the budgetary allocation, and worse still, it has to be cut in slightly over seven months – March 1 to September 30 – and not twelve months.

Myth #4: The cuts will either have a negative impact on the economy or they won’t felt at all:  The cuts will definitely affect the economy, but it’s not easy to tell the extent to which it will be affected. Based on assumptions, the spending cuts, if conducted throughout the year, will slow down economic progress by 0.6 percent in 2013, and cut down on the number of full-time positions by 750,000.

Frank Campitelli: Hey, hi.

Incredible Discoveries: First question I’m sure everyone wants to know is – How do you get a body like this using a machine so simple like this?

Frank Campitelli: Well, I wanted the machine to be simple.  For the last twenty years, as a trainer, I have worked with multitudes of people. And getting in shape, especially guys, they want to work their chest, they want to work their arms and they want to work their abs.  But they also need to work their back and their legs.

Incredible Discoveries: Ok, what about women. What can they get out of the Titan 1000?

Frank Campitelli: Well to answer that question, here is my partner Debrae Barensfeld.

Incredible Discoveries: Hey Debrae!

Debrae Barensfeld: Hi Incredible Discoveries!

Incredible Discoveries: Welcome to the show!

Debrae Barensfeld: Thank you.

Incredible Discoveries: What can ladies get out of this amazing machine?

Debrae Barensfeld: You know women love to work their lower bodies. And the three most effective exercises for the lower body are squats, dead lifts and leg presses. But we really need to work on our upper body too.  You know women should think more about their posture and they can get a much shapelier figure when they work their body.

Incredible Discoveries: Ok.

Debrae Barensfeld: So here is how they can do that with the Titan 1000.

Incredible Discoveries: This is great.  You can work out every major body part on this one machine. We’re talking chest, back, legs, arms as you see here: shoulders, abs, calves and lower back – all in one machine. That is great.

Frank Campitelli: You got it. On the Nitroforce Titan 1000 you can do over ninety different exercises.

Incredible Discoveries: Whoa.

Debrae Barensfeld: And that gives you so much variety to keep you coming back for more and more every time, especially when you start seeing the leaner sexier body that you can only get from resistance training.

Frank Campitelli: And research is proving that it is resistance training that changes and reshapes your body.  It’s resistance training that raises your metabolism longer. Resistance training that builds and strengthens your bones and strengthens your muscles.

Incredible Discoveries: Ok, that sounds great, guys; but other home gyms do offer resistance training. How can you say that the Nitroforce Titan 1000 is the most important breakthrough in home training equipment in the last fifty years?

Debrae Barensfeld: I can answer that in two words: Nitrogen Gas.

Incredible Discoveries: Nitrogen gas? Alright, we definitely have to explain this one.

Frank Campitelli: Ok.  By harnessing Nitrogen gas and high pressure springs for resistance, they become self-contained tools for resistance.  So, we have been able to create the strongest, lightest, fastest most powerful body shaping tool ever built.

Debrae Barensfeld: We’ve created the first know perfected application of these springs to be used as resistance rather than assistance.

Incredible Discoveries: So basically when you push, they resist?

Frank Campitelli: Exactly. These little shock absorber-looking units have tremendous strength capabilities.  It comes from the high pressure charge of Nitrogen to the seal inside.  Up to 2500 psi, in each spring. My patented Nitroforce technology has no mass, no velocity, no momentum, and excellent control at incredible output forces. The springs work by plunging the shaft into the shock body; thus displacing volume which increases the pressure. That’s why it’s called a spring.

Debrae Barensfeld: So, if you can’t overcome the pressure inside the two, which is completely adjustable based on your needs. It pushes back so if you’re not strong enough to lift that weight it simply won’t move. Just to adjust it you just slide the cuff to change your resistance.

Incredible Discoveries: Man that is fantastic. Now how much resistance can you get from these little springs? I’m guessing a couple hundred pounds?

Frank Campitelli: Haha. Dave these little babies can generate resistance from one pound up to one thousand pounds.

Incredible Discoveries: One thousand pounds? Now were talking like half a ton here. Now only the strongest body builders would be able to move something that heavy.

Debrae Barensfeld: You’re absolutely right. But what it means is that there is enough weight for everyone in between.

Incredible Discoveries: So, I get it. See no matter what kind of resistance that you’re looking for. Whether it’s one pound or several hundred the Nitroforce Titan 1000 can give it to you all in one easy to use, easy to adjust training system.

Frank Campitelli: Right.  It’s a really light machine, also.  I’ll demonstrate, by lifting one end of the machine, using only one of my hands.

Incredible Discoveries: Alright. Whoa! Look at that, now wait a minute I’m confused. How can a machine that creates one thousand pounds of resistance weigh less than I do?

Debrae Barensfeld: That’s because each spring only weighs two pounds. Four springs can generate the force of a thousand pound press without weighing a thousand pounds. So between his patented technology and the sleek compact engineering you’re able to achieve an unsurpassed ten to one output force without putting a giant half ton machine into your house.

Incredible Discoveries: I know exactly what you’re saying. You could put this anywhere, in a house, a condo, an apartment. So, all that force plus the incredible variety of exercise make free weights obsolete.

Frank Campitelli: Yes, but not just free weights. We’re eliminating all the bulky band systems, all the spastic bow systems and all the bungees, all gone, all unnecessary all antiquated.

Incredible Discoveries: All made obsolete by the Nitroforce Titan 1000. For more information on this incredible discovery, visit thenitroforce.com

Scott T. Sohr on Elmington Capital’s Latest Venture in Louisville, Kentucky

Scott T. Sohr

Scott T. Sohr

The country’s economy and real estate sector took a pretty hard hit in 2008, as everyone knows. Scott T. Sohr saw opportunity in that downturn, however; in 2010, he founded Elmington Capital Group, with the mission of acquiring distressed properties and REO real estate. Since then, Scott T. Sohr and Elmington Capital Group have put together a portfolio of over 300,000 square feet of office space, over 1000 apartment units, a number of residential communities and developments, and several office parks and commercial warehouse complexes, and is positioned to continue its growth scheme. The scale of Elmington Capital has given it the ability to swing real estate transactions that would be too big or expensive for smaller investors; Elmington then uses these investment vehicles to deliver the best returns possible to its stakeholders, according to Scott T. Sohr.

Information Nation: Welcome and thank you for joining us today, Scott T. Sohr. Please begin by telling our readers about Elmington Capital Group.

Scott T. Sohr: It’s my pleasure. Elmington Capital group is an investment firm that revitalizes struggling residential and commercial properties—along with many other business ventures—and helps pump new capital and equity into these enterprises. We’re located in Nashville, Tennessee.

Information Nation: We understand that recently Elmington purchased some apartments in Louisville, Kentucky…why Louisville?

Scott T. Sohr: Well, Louisville has seen major growth and expansion in recent years. It’s probably the most prosperous city in Kentucky, and in fact, the entire South. The downtown area is booming due to the recent revitalization, and it’s quickly becoming a major tourist destination.

Information Nation: What exactly do you believe has contributed to the growth of Louisville?

Scott T. Sohr: Part of the reason is the location. It’s very conveniently located at the interchange of several interstates. It’s also home to the University of Louisville, which has grown quite a bit in recent years. The school’s sports teams have huge followings and a giant fan base. All of this, combined with the city’s historic downtown district and new entertainment venues, make Louisville a destination city in the South.

Information Nation: Tell us about the community you purchased…

Scott T. Sohr: Well, we believe that this community is just a great investment all around for Elmington Capital Group. The apartments as a whole were $22 million, and they contain 596 units. When we purchased them, they were 97 percent occupied, which equals a strong revenue stream. Now it’s our job to continue making these apartments a desirable place to live and ensure that the occupation rate stays where it is or even increases.

Information Nation: How does this investment work out for Elmington Capital Group?

Scott T. Sohr: Well, when you do the math, it turns that each unit we purchased cost $36,900. So we feel that this was actually an excellent investment for our investors, as rental properties in hot cities like Louisville tend to only increase over time.

Information Nation: Finally, Scott T. Sohr, tell us what you hope to accomplish with this property?

Scott T. Sohr: Given its occupancy rate, we know the property was already successful. Now we hope to continue that success while also making sure our investment becomes one of the most desirable places to live in a truly up and coming city. Louisville is a special place, and we’re glad to be a part of it.

Scott T. Sohr is a land and real estate developer and entrepreneur based in Nashville, Tennessee. Scott T. Sohr has developed many successful residential neighborhoods in and around Middle Tennessee. Scott T. Sohr is a graduate of Franklin High School, and his familiarity with the South has helped Elmington Capital Group achieve success throughout the Southeast.

Television Producer for Lifetime Television Gregory Fake Talks Literature

Gregory Fake

Gregory Fake

In the following interview, Gregory Fake, assistant television producer for Lifetime Television’s morning show, The Balancing Act, talks about his love of literature, a couple of his favorite authors, and how literature plays a big role in his career.

Q:  How did your love for literature begin?

Gregory Fake:  From a very young age, I had a ferocious interest in reading.  In fourth grade, I read 140 books, more than any other student at Sam Houston Elementary.

Q:  Your parents must have been very proud!

Gregory Fake:  Oh, yes!  Considering the fact they were both writers, they were very happy to see their son reading so much.

Q:  Who are some of your favorite authors?

Gregory Fake:  My interests vary, but I have continually returned to C. S. Lewis and J .R. R. Tolkien throughout my life.

Q:  These are two of the most famous authors ever; can you tell readers why you love their work?

Gregory Fake:  These two authors created works throughout their lives like no one else.  They created fantastical worlds that have the ability to draw readers in and keep them captivated for hundreds of pages.

Q:  Please give readers a little background on each author.

Gregory Fake:  I’d love to.  I might get carried away here, so stop me at any point!

Q:  Let’s start with C. S. Lewis.

Gregory Fake:  What a tremendous story. As a boy growing up in Ireland, C. S. Lewis was surrounded by the stunning landscape of the country.  There, he developed a profound interest in nature and in animals that lead to his boyhood stories about anthropomorphic animals, or animals that are humanlike.

Q:  Sounds like The Chronicles of Narnia in the making.

Gregory Fake:  Yes, C. S. Lewis’s early interest in animals and nature collided with his later interest in mythology, creating the basis for this tremendous series.

Q:  Now, what about J. R. R. Tolkien?

Gregory Fake:  Similarly, J. R. R. Tolkien took much from his childhood when developing his most famous works.  For Tolkien, the English villages, bogs, and countryside very much influenced the settings found in his books.  He and his cousin also created their own language when they were young, which lead to his eventual development of Naffarin, the made-up language used in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.

Q:  It seems like these remarkable authors had a lot in common.

Gregory Fake:  Yes, it’s incredible, really.  In addition to living in such a beautiful part of the world and being exposed to so much in nature as children, these authors, who were very close in age, went on to both become scholars and professors and were, at one point, friends.

Q:  How does your love for literature translate into your everyday life as a television producer?

Gregory Fake:  I am so lucky to be able to work with many bestselling authors, health and legal experts, and children’s authors when developing segments for the show.

Q:  Good for you! To close, what are you reading right now?

Gregory Fake:  I am diving into the many works written by members of the Inklings, a literary club that included both C.S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, amongst other authors, who were dedicated to fantasy writing in some shape or form.

Gregory Fakes lives with his wife and children in Florida, where he enjoys volunteering at his church, outdoor activities, and….reading!

Italian Businessman Aldo Todini Speaks about The Island of Capri

Aldo Todini

Aldo Todini

The island of Capri has been a luxury retreat since the time of the Roman Republic, explains Aldo Todini. It is home to numerous events including the Capri Art Film Festival, the Capri Tango Festival, and the International Folklore Festival.

Capri is a prime tourist destination for both Italian natives and foreign visitors, says Aldo Todini. The island has been known as a prime vacation destination since the 1950s. Aldo Todini explains that Capri is an easy day trip from Naples or Sorrento, and boasts picturesque shorelines and foggy mountain peaks sure to please even the most seasoned traveler.

The Beaches

According to Aldo Todini, Capri offers visitors endless opportunities to bask in the sun. The luxury hotel on the seafront of Marina Piccola and the coast of Faro are beautiful, says Aldo Todini. He says that the island’s coast is loved by his people. The beaches of Capri are unique among resorts and visitors to the region to enjoy the beauty of the rocky ledges overlooking the soft sandy beaches.

Historical Sites

The Island of Capri was a favorite haunt of Emperor Tiberius, who, Aldo Todini reports, built his Villa Jovis on the edge of the cliffs at Viale Amedeo Maturi. With remarkable views and unrivaled privacy, Villa Jovis is known as an architectural oddity of the time as it was built with varying levels. Aldo Todini says this was necessary because of its mountainous location.

The Charterhouse of St. Giacomo is a 14th-century masterpiece situated in the heart of Capri, says Aldo Todini. It was built in 1371 and is home the oldest remaining structures on the island. Today, the ancient monastery is used for cultural and social events and also houses a high school.

Aldo Todini stresses that the Grotto Azzura is one of the must-see attractions in Capri. The grotto, which once served as a monument to the ancient sea deities, is celebrated because of its naturally blue waters. Aldo Todini explains that the coloring is the result of filtered light entering the cavern via a submerged opening just below the cave’s entrance.

Capri By Sea

While the mainland of the island in itself is spectacular, Aldo Todini claims a tour of the perimeter offers unrivaled views of this ancient and historical isle. From boat, visitors can delight by observing Capri’s natural arches, the Grotto Verde, the Lighthouse of Punta Carena, and the statue of the Scugnizzo. Aldo Todini suggests a boat tour in early morning to avoid crowded seas and unstable waters.

Staying In Capri

This magnificent little island boasts five-star luxury accommodations and small boutique hotels along with a number of peaceful bed-and-breakfast lodgings, says Aldo Todini. Pricing varies by season and location.

Stare a Capri
