An Interview with Family Pride Corporation’s Rick Dover Regarding Senior Housing Needs

Rick Dover

Rick Dover

Since 1994, Rick Dover and his company, Family Pride Corporation, have been focusing on creating living accommodations for senior citizens in Loudon County, Tennessee. Today, Rick Dover explains why seniors have a different set of needs and what amenities they are looking for.

Information Nation: Thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to join us today.

Rick Dover: It is absolutely my pleasure.

Information Nation: We understand that for the last two decades you have focused most of your energies on building senior housing. Before we begin, can you tell us why that is?

Rick Dover: When my family and I were looking for an affordable living arrangement for my aging grandfather, we came up short. So, since I had a background in real estate development, I decided it was my duty to fulfill this very real need.

Information Nation: But, why Loudon County?

Rick Dover: I’m from Knoxville so I have known about and visited Loudon County all of my life. The town’s historic charm was beginning to deteriorate so I thought why not?

Information Nation: Finding senior housing is definitely stressful. What do you suggest for seniors just beginning their search?

Rick Dover: Do not do it alone. Make sure to have as much support as possible and look for a facility that has amenities for comfort, convenience, and practical living.

Information Nation: What sort of housing do seniors usually need?

Rick Dover: For independent living, I would say that seniors need a single level home. Many report to me that a small kitchen suits them just fine and an even smaller yard with just enough room for a bit of landscaping here and there is ideal.

Information Nation: What is the benefit of having a smaller house?

Rick Dover: Aside from possibly limited mobility, seniors are typically on a fixed income and a smaller home can equate to less money in utilities each month.

Information Nation: What about flooring?

Rick Dover: That’s a tricky one. Seniors definitely want flooring that looks good but also that isn’t slippery and is easy to clean.

Information Nation: And the lighting, we understand you tend to take special care with lightning?

Rick Dover: I do, that’s true. This is because, as seniors age, their eyesight may not be as it once was. Therefore, nice, consistent, bright light is an asset.

Information Nation: Do seniors have any specific requirements for counter space and storage?

Rick Dover: Seniors typically need more storage and plenty of counter space to spread out. Ample storage means there is less chance for clutter which not only reduces stress but untidiness is a safety issue as well.

Information Nation: What about laundry facilities?

Rick Dover: In my experience, seniors typically want a separate laundry room that is easily accessible from the kitchen.

Information Nation: Can you explain to us a little about the concept of aging in place?

Rick Dover: Essentially, aging in place means that seniors can remain in one general location and have access to ample services as they are needed. This may mean living in the same location from the early post-retirement years up to hospice and end-of-life care.

Information Nation: Many seniors choose to live in an organized facility. Can you explain a little about these arrangements?

Rick Dover: There are many different assisted and independent living facilities available. Independent living means that the senior essentially cares for themselves in all aspects but with a bit of oversight from nonmedical personnel. For seniors needing a bit more assistance, there are facilities that resemble apartment homes and may provide services such as housekeeping and transportation assistance. There are also skilled nursing and memory care accommodations available.

Information Nation: Is there any certain level of care that all seniors need?

Rick Dover: Senior needs are as varied as they are. Each individual will require a different level of care.

Information Nation: What about the social aspect of retirement. Do assisted living facilities help that?

Rick Dover: Absolutely. Many seniors elect to enter a retirement community for the social aspect alone. Many communities offer amenities such as game rooms and scheduled activities for older seniors who want to remain active.

Information Nation: Do you have anything to add about senior living arrangements?

Rick Dover: I would like to add that Family Pride Corporation takes great care to create facilities that are not only affordable but also memorable. We specialize in renovating historic buildings for the purpose of senior assisted living. We do this in memory of my grandfather and hope that our love of family shows in each renovation that we perform.

Rick Dover and Family Pride Corporation have been in existence since 1994. Along with his mother, Lucy, Rick Dover founded the company by refurbishing existing structures to create comfortable living space for the active and growing senior community of Loudon County.

Rick Dover lives in East Tennessee with his wife, Laurie.

Pam Gray, Bonaventure Senior Living COO, On Food for Thought

Pam Gray Bonaventure

Pam Gray Bonaventure

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO since 2004, has spent her career helping seniors live their lives to the fullest.  Many people worry about getting dementia and Alzheimer’s as they grow older, notes Pam Gray of Bonaventure.  In the following interview, Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO, talks about how food can impact brain functioning.

Information Nation:  Thanks for joining us!  Please tell readers about Bonaventure.

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO:  Thanks!  Bonaventure is a network of senior living communities with campuses located in six states.

Information Nation:  Tell readers what you know about brain disease in older adults.

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO:  It is not as prevalent as everyone might think.  According to eMedicine physicians, as low as 1 percent of people age 60-65 have dementia, and about 30-50 percent of those over age 85.

Information Nation:  The cases really jump up with age; why is that?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO:  It is a fact that our bodies and brains deteriorate as we age; the older you get, the more problems you tend to face.

Information Nation:  What are some of the symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO:  Memory loss is most commonly associated with these diseases.  These are degenerative diseases, meaning someone may go from forgetting names or how to drive, to complete dependence on others to function.

Information Nation:  How can food help combat brain disease?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO:  Research has found so many foods that help keep the brain healthy and slow, reverse, or even stop these brain diseases from progressing.

Information Nation:  What types of foods should we be eating?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO:  Choose foods high in antioxidants.  Antioxidants found in berries, for example, stop inflammation in the brain and allow cells to work better.  There are also good antioxidants in spinach, grapefruit, and apples.

Information Nation:  What if I don’t enjoy those foods?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO:  Antioxidants can also be found in wine and dark chocolate!

Information Nation:  What else?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO:  The Omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon have been found to lower the blood levels beta-amyloid, thought to be linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

Information Nation:  Where else can seniors get good fats?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO:  Fish oil supplements are available and there are good fats in certain nuts.  If fish oil is not your thing, a great alternative is flax seed oil.

Information Nation:  What about Indian food?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO:  Indian food can be great, especially if the dish contains turmeric!  Curcumin, found in turmeric, has been linked to preventing Alzheimer’s.

Information Nation:  What foods should be avoided?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO:  Processed food and any saturated fats that clog up the brain.

Information Nation:  Is this an all-or-nothing deal?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO:  No, even incorporating some of these foods into the diet can be helpful.

Information Nation:  Where can readers learn more about brain healthy eating?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO:  WebMD, the Mayo Clinic, and AARP all provide great information.

Remembering the Good Old Days: The Comfort of Life in Mayberry

One of the few television shows from the 1960s that still regularly airs on network and cable TV is the Andy Griffith Show. Set in the fictional North Carolina town of Mayberry, the Andy Griffith Show was an instant hit and continues to resonate with viewers today. Watching the show in 2013, it’s hard to imagine a world—even a fictitious one—so peaceful and relaxed ever existed on television. Although Andy Griffith played a sheriff, he rarely dealt with criminals more hardened than the town drunk or the occasional petty thief. The world of Mayberry is one of comical mischief, math tests and awkward school dances for Opie, and a Friday night double date for Andy and his loyal deputy Barney.

Could such a show succeed today? It’s difficult to say. News dominates the airwaves 24/7, and it’s often bad news. All around, the media seems eager to showcase the latest information on a breaking news story, whether of more violence or stocks crashing or mass unemployment. But in Mayberry, life goes on as usual, and at the end of the day, there’s always a peaceful resolution to the day’s problem.

With most of the main cast deceased (except for Ron Howard), it might be easy to dismiss the Andy Griffith Show as nothing but a relic of the past—a time capsule of mid-century small-town America. But the show actually represents a time period that never truly existed. During most the show’s original run, the United States was going through the middle of a social revolution, and by the time the show ended in 1968, the Vietnam War was in full swing. The show may have seemed as quaint and detached from reality to viewers then as it does to viewers now.

Baby boomers and their parents, who watched the show during its original run, aren’t the only ones who have a strong attachment to the sitcom. In fact, Joey Fann wrote a book about the show called The Way Back to Mayberry: Lessons From Simpler Times, which contains Bible verses illustrated by 30 different episodes of the show. The book has proven to be so popular that it’s used in many churches as a study guide. Because of its strong moral values and comforting presence in increasingly uncertain times, the Andy Griffith Show is deceptively deep, and will continue to be discussed for years to come.

Making Your Life Count – How to Find More Hours in the Day

Life is a real juggling act that requires a lot of personal strength and determination to be successful.  As you probably already know, the most successful people accomplish a lot every day, without becoming overwhelmed and overstressed.  Here are a few tips to help business professionals gain control of life and get ahead.

1:  Prioritize

Make daily task lists and label them:  must do, want to do, and should do.  This ritual will focus your energy and is a simple way to start feeling more in control of your life.  Once this practice becomes habitual, you will be amazed by how much you are accomplishing.

2:  Organize

It’s probably that you already use a calendar system for work – but what about for home? A family calendar is essential for tracking family activities. Systems like cozi.com or Google Calendars allow families to schedule sporting events, nightly meals and more.  While setting up the calendar may take a bit of time, the time you spend upfront will be made up by not having to drive a homework assignment to school this week.

3:  Analyze

Think about the activities you are engaged in and ask:  Am I currently inspiring someone, making money, or creating happiness for myself or someone else?  If your answer is “no”, then consider applying your energy elsewhere to lead to a more successful life.

4:  Franchise

If you don’t have time to get to the housework or you spend hours in the car traveling to daycare, consider hiring help.  Although extra help adds expense, this will allow you more time to focus on your job and increasing your income while at work, and focus more on your family when you’re home.

5:  Fantasize

No, really. Begin to visualize becoming more successful and determine the practical skills and steps you need to take to get there. And do not limit yourself.  If life’s daily tasks are keeping you from becoming the successful person you see in others, a few minor tweaks may be all you need to turn things around.

Then begin to take just one of these tips and incorporate them into your life today for a more productive tomorrow.

Jeffrey Nimer Discusses the Ban on Foie Gras

Jeffrey Nimer

Jeffrey Nimer

Chef Jeffrey Nimer has traveled the world in order to sample cuisine from a variety of cultures. For this reason, Jeffrey Nimer has a versatile palate that has opened him up to dishes he might not have otherwise prepared. However, in recent years, Jeffrey Nimer has noticed a backlash against a certain cooking ingredient that has led it to be banned in the state of California where he works. Recently, Jeffrey Nimer spoke to Interviews & News about foie gras, which has become a taboo in the food industry.

Interviews & News: Can you explain to our readers just what foie gras is?

Jeffrey Nimer: Foie gras is a dish comprised of geese liver, which contains high level of fat. In America, foie gras tends to be prepared with duck liver instead of goose.

Interviews & News: Why the recent controversy?

Jeffrey Nimer: The controversy is largely due to how these birds are supposedly treated as they are prepared for slaughter.

Interviews & News: How are they treated?

Jeffrey Nimer: To prepare the birds, they are fed a special diet that helps increase fat levels in the liver. Doing this involves putting a funnel or auger down the bird’s throat, a process that brings protests from animal rights activists and others.

Interviews & News: What I’ve heard is that instead of completely driving foie gras from the market, all the fuss has increased demand for it. How in the world does that happen?

Jeffrey Nimer: Experts call it the “cookie in the jar” phenomenon. The more something is disallowed, the more the public wants it.

Interviews & News: Similar to Prohibition?

Jeffrey Nimer: Yes. People want what they can’t have.

Interviews & News: Is the hype justified?

Jeffrey Nimer: The process of fattening birds is similar to their own eating process in the wild.

Interviews & News: Are you for or against the ban?

Jeffrey Nimer: Well, I believe when multiple states ban a particular food, it invites unfair trade practice.

Interviews & News: With such a demand, what can chefs do?

Jeffrey Nimer: As long as the ban is in place, chefs can either turn down clients who are often willing to pay top-dollar for the coveted dish or serve foie gras anyway.

Interviews & News: What happens if a chef is caught serving foie gras?

Jeffrey Nimer: Fines can be a thousand dollars a day, which is pretty high.

Interviews & News: Do you think the ban will be removed soon?

Jeffrey Nimer: Many in the industry aren’t hopeful that it will. Currently there’s nothing in the works that would turn things around.

Jeffrey Nimer is the Founder of Haute Chefs, a full-service catering business that provides delicious cuisine to a variety of clients in the Los Angeles area. A highly respected chef, he has cooked for some of the biggest names in the entertainment business.

Advice from Dan Sciscente: Work Hard, Play Harder

Dan Sciscente

Dan Sciscente

How Dan Sciscente, founder of Communi-T and Professional Project Manager – balances work and play.

Dan Sciscente is a business owner, a family man, and an avid recreationalist who says that he is a better provider for his family when he feels a sense of balance. He is the founder of Communi-T, the world’s most efficient SAP interface software, and a project manager with millions of dollars of successful ventures in his career. So how does Dan Sciscente create a harmonious home-life while running a multifaceted business?

Sleep

Dan Sciscente says that sleep, although it sounds like a given, is often the most overlooked area in a person’s life – especially when there is so much to fit into 24 hours. Finding a way to rest is one of the best things someone can do to recharge, both professionally and personally, says Dan Sciscente.

Find Good Help

As a business owner, Dan Sciscente knows the value of good employees. He claims that finding someone who is willing to work isn’t the most important aspect in hiring good help. According to Dan Sciscente, willingness doesn’t always equal ability, so it’s vital to wait for the right person. Otherwise, you’ll be spending more time training or even looking for a replacement.

Walk Away

When things get too tough, it’s time to walk, says Dan Sciscente. He doesn’t mean walk for good, but take a moment to look away and then your original issue doesn’t seem so impossible. According to Dan Sciscente, sometimes letting work sit for an hour or so is the best way to gain momentum and then get it done so you can enjoy the rest of your day.

Family Time

Family time without smart phones, tablets, PCs, or any interference from the outside world is paramount to finding balance, says Dan Sciscente. He and his family like to get out on the water and enjoy a day scuttling around boating to local beaches or lounging by the pool.

Alone Time

Often, parents feel guilty for taking a few moments for themselves when they are home, says Dan Sciscente. But, he says, it is necessary in order to ensure you are at your best for both your family and others in your life that rely on you. He enjoys his alone time watching Formula 1 and NASCAR racing, or simply making music in his studio

Dan Sciscente claims that it isn’t always easy to separate your personal life from other aspects but it is necessary in order to achieve balance. Doing so will not only improve your relationships at home but also those in your professional environment as well, concludes Dan Sciscente.

Douglas Battista Dishes on the Health Benefits of Yoga

Douglas Battista

Douglas Battista

Information Nation recently sat down with Douglas Battista to discuss the benefits of the Vinyasa flow yoga. Here, the Human Resources executive touches on the positive effects this ancient ritual can have on modern man.

Information Nation: Thank you for joining us today, Douglas Battista. We understand that yoga is an important part of your life.

Douglas Battista: That it is; I believe that it offers combined benefits that no other method of physical training can.

Information Nation: Can you tell us what Vinyasa flow yoga is?

Douglas Battista: It is a form of yoga that focuses on finding a link between breathing and movements that one makes.

Information Nation: Now we understand that traditionally, this form of yoga is performed under unusual conditions. Can you explain?

Douglas Battista: It’s customary for classes to be taught in a heated studio. Temperatures inside of the training room can be in excess of 80°.

Information Nation: You mentioned that there are numerous benefits?

Douglas Battista: Yes, this particular type of yoga is exceptionally efficient for strength training and flexibility. As well, it helps to relieve stress and has a great deal of other physiological benefits that are associated.

Information Nation: Let’s start with strength training. How exactly does yoga, which traditionally does not involve any sort of weights, help one build lean muscle mass?

Douglas Battista: First, I would like to say that this particular form of yoga encourages whole body balance. Through a series of intentional movements, including backbends and a number of different poses, Vinyasa can fatigue the muscles, which in turn causes them to regenerate.

Information Nation: If we understand correctly, yoga utilizes all body parts equally. Is this important?

Douglas Battista: That goes back to the issues of balance. The entire body learns to work in harmony with itself. Additionally, the muscles relax, creating greater flexibility and increasing blood flow to the entire body.

Information Nation: Having a stress-free body equates to a stress-free mind.

Douglas Battista: Yes it does, and through the intentional inhalations and exhalations of breath, this form of yoga can also have a calming effect on the central nervous system.

Information Nation: You mentioned other physiological benefits?

Douglas Battista: Studies show that those who regularly practice this form of yoga have a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes, and blood high pressure.

Information Nation: Those are definitely wonderful side effects. Before we go, we have to ask: is this a difficult process to learn?

Douglas Battista: As with any sort of exercise regimen, there are going to be movements that have to be learned and changes that have to be made in one’s entire lifestyle. It isn’t hard, however it does require dedication and determination to see long-term positive change.

Theodore Stroukoff Discusses the Joy of Living in New Mexico

Theodore Stroukoff

Theodore Stroukoff

Theodore Stroukoff was born in New Jersey, but he has spent much of his adult life in New Mexico. While many tourists view New Mexico as one of the most beautiful places in the world to visit, Theodore Stroukoff has learned of the state’s many other charms while living there. There are many benefits to living in one of the country’s most diverse states, Theodore Stroukoff states, starting with its ethnic diversity.

According to Theodore Stroukoff, 42 percent of New Mexico’s population is Hispanic. Ten percent are Native American. This makes for a unique blend of cultures that makes New Mexico one of the most interesting places to live in the world, according to Theodore Stroukoff.

Another benefit to living in New Mexico is the cost of living. New Mexico boasts some of the lowest home prices in the country, although Santa Fe’s homes can land in the pricier range, acknowledges Theodore Stroukoff. However, areas like Albuquerque contain homes at about half the price of those in Santa Fe. The overall cost of living in New Mexico is five percent lower than the national average, with an unemployment rate that is also below the national average.

The weather is another reason to live in New Mexico, Theodore Stroukoff states, with occasional snow in some areas and plenty of sunshine throughout the state. Many cite the clean New Mexico air as ideal for getting in touch with nature and cleansing the mind. For that reason, residents like Theodore Stroukoff feel that New Mexico contributes to a person’s overall health.

Albuquerque, specifically, has been named one of Money magazine’s best places to live. Money named the city’s scenic views, as well as its annual balloon festival, Theodore Stroukoff recalls. According to Theodore Stroukoff, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta features more than seven hundred hot air balloons that fill the skies. This festival is one of the most photographed events in the world.

The balloon fiesta is just one of many cultural events hosted throughout the state, Theodore Stroukoff points out. Theodore Stroukoff has also enjoyed the state’s quarter horse racing, an annual duck race, numerous cultural festivals, and the Roswell UFO Festival. Even this small sampling events shows the state’s diverse offerings, Theodore Stroukoff emphasizes.

There are so many reasons to visit New Mexico, but Theodore Stroukoff is proud to call the state home. While his work as a travel nurse takes him to many different areas, Theodore Stroukoff can’t think of anywhere he’d rather come home to than New Mexico.
