How to Operate Electric Hoists Safely

Integrity Crane and HoistOften used as attachments to gantry cranes, electric hoists are essential to lift
ensuring secure and safe transport of heavy loads. In operating an electric hoist, one should observe precautions to maintain workplace safety.

Electric hoist operator qualifications

An electrical hoist operator must have a sound mind and body and have extensive, equipment-specific training and experience. On-site training and relevant certifications are essential to the role.

In these situations, we should not use an electric hoist.

In these scenarios, we should not use an electric hoist:

  • The worksite has unfavorable lighting conditions.
  • The sling is unbalanced and may slide.
  • The edges of the objects to be raised with the steel wire rope are not aligned.
  • Parts such as brakes, stoppers, and hooks are showing signs of wear and tear.
  • Transporting objects that exceeded the recommended weight limits.

Ensuring safety during lifting operations

Electric hoist operators should avoid hurried and sudden movements that can cause potentially hazardous situations – this is why in-depth training and experience are crucial qualifications.

Keep the work site clear of any obstructions. The hoist should be stable and anchored as recommended, while the load should be centered to prevent dislodging during the operation.

Always use the appropriate hoist for the task at hand and should lift only static loads; do not lift loads that are vibrating or in motion.

Do complete lifting operations as soon as possible. Leaving loads suspended in an unsafe practice should be avoided.

When hoisting equipment is not in use, make sure to cut off all power sources, including electricity.

Electric hoist maintenance

Ensure the electric hoist is clean before use; grease and grime can lead to load slippage, which can cause potential accidents. For smooth and hassle-free lifts, they should consistently lubricate wire ropes and chains. To ensure its reliability and durability, they must also do inspections before each shift and at regular intervals.

Store electric hoists in a cool and dry location; equipment placed in high humidity environments can be prone to rust.
